Selena Gomez made a surprise return to the public eye at the American Music Awards on Sunday night. The singer has been taking time off to attend to her health since August, but she was nominated for two awards at the 2016 A.M.A.s. She won one of them, Favorite Female Artist-Pop/Rock, and she delivered an extremely emotional speech when she got to the mic.
“In 2014, this stage was actually the first time I was authentically, 100-percent honest with all of you. I believe it’s safe to say that the majority of you know a lot of my life—in any case—and I needed to stop. ‘Cause I had everything, and I was totally broken inside,” Gomez started.
She told the audience that she kept it all together for her fans, however she put her own particular well being and happiness second in doing so. She shared what she’s realized in the time since she was first in front of an audience at the A.M.A.s in 2014 before ending her speech: “If you are broken, then you do not have to stay broken.”
The artist announced in August that she’d be canceling out upcoming appearances and performances to enter a rehab facility to deal with depression and stress, stemming from a lupus diagnosis.
“I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take a break,“ the 24-year-old told people. “Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be to address their own issues.”

You know that you are so uncommon to me, yet I have to face this make a beeline for guarantee I am doing everything conceivable to be my best. I know I am not the only one by sharing this, I trust others will be encouraged to address their own particular issues.”
Gomez did not do any interviews Sunday night on the carpet, so there’s no guarantee the night’s award show marked the singer’s complete return to the public eye.
