Football is a common man’s game. But being a professional football star isn’t easy; only a fortunate few can realise this dream. Being a football star has its attendant benefits like multi-million pay packets, designer apparel, signature edition cars and of course a weekend-only work schedule. Here are some of the star footballers and their machines.
Karim Benzema: France and Real Madrid
Playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world and going toe-to-toe with the biggest football stars on the planet definitely pays. Los Blancos’ forward Karim Benzema is a proud owner of a Bugatti Veyron. The Veyron is one of the fastest, and most exotic road cars in existence, capable of reaching a top speed of 267.86mph, apparently. It is also very rare, considering Bugatti made only 450 of them. This engineering masterpiece, which boasts of 1,000 horsepower (it’s true), set the French striker back a cool GBP 1.2 million. No wonder he looks happy!
The Portuguese superstar has made it no secret his love for cars. And the Porsche 911 Turbo S is one of many that adorn his driveway in the outskirts of sunny Madrid. The 911 is the perfect car for the Portguese, who is known for his pace. The beast from Germany can hit the 100kmph mark in a dizzying 2.8 seconds (company claimed)! The two-time Ballon d’Or winner had to shell out GBP 146,000 for the 911. Pocket change for him.
Arguably the greatest player to have graced the pitch, Lionel Messi’s choice of wheels is the classy Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale. The car might be a mouthful but can hit dizzying speeds, eventually topping out at 188mph. The car costs GBP 107,000, which isn’t that much considering he earns almost thrice as much every week!
Part of the deadly MSN trio of Barcelona, Neymar drops into training in his red-hot Ferrai 458. The picture, which the Brazilian shared on Instagram, shows him sitting on top of the GBP 200,000 beast. The caption read: ‘Thank you God for giving me health and the fruit of my work can make another child’s dream!’. If this isn’t proof enough that hard work pays, nothing else will!
Controversial striker Mario Balotelli might be playing for AC Milan now but during his Manchester City days he was famous, apart from many off-field incidents, for his Bentley Continental GT. Why was this car special? Originallt in white, the Italian put army camouflage wrap on the car. For a guy who loves being in the limelight, it seemed a strange move cloaking his GBP 160,000 car in that vinyl. Of course, the fact it only attracted more attention was no surprise. In a outstanding move of generosity, he apparently gave away the car to teammate Urby Emanuelson.
The Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney’s favourite toy is BMW i8. The plug-in hybrid car costs GBP 105,000 and is an interesting choice for the star considering his colleagues roll in to Carrington in less environmentally-friendly cars. The i8 uses a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a turbocharged three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and BMW eDrive technology in the form of an electric drive system.
